Henry Davis Hendricks

  • My nicknames include: “Davis,” “Dave,” “Davey,” “David”…the band has others for me, but we won’t go there.
  • Instruments: Singer and percussion. I also play acoustic guitar, some keyboards, native American flute, and a little bass.
  • Brands: microphones and in-ear monitor system – Shure. I also own a Specter bass, a Washburn electric guitar, a Charvel 625C Electric-Acoustic guitar, a variety of percussion equipment including, Latin Percussion portable congas, handmade African Djembe, and assorted shakers, tambourines, cowbells, and drums, and an ancient Kimball and Bach upright piano.
  • My favorite bands or musical artists are: Fourplay, Jeff Beck, Robben Ford, The Rippingtons (Jazz/Rock/Fusion); Santana, Toto, Eagles, Steely Dan, Eric Clapton, Yes, Emerson, Lake, and Palmer (rock); Earth Wind & Fire, Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding (R&B); James Taylor, Al Jarreau, Jessica Lauren, Norah Jones, Adele (singer/songwriters); 607 or Adrian Tillman (hip-hop); Big Daddy “O” (blues); Chris Tomlin (praise/worship). Local: Katmandu, The Swingin’ Franks/Groan-ups, Jay Jackson Band, The LEVIites, White Chocolate, Bob Boyd Sounds, Bruno & Bill, Shannon Boshears, The Flying Baloon-O Brothers, Clifford Hawkins Band, and the Marchese Hendricks Project featuring Jessica Lauren.
  • My first paying gig was at the age of 5. I danced and sang on a table at my Uncle George’s restaurant, The Davis Grill, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, to Elvis on the jukebox while people left quarters on the table. Then I was on hiatus for 17 years until I played the McCrory Skating Rink, (where Black Oak got its start) with a college brass group called SHAGG.
  • I have been married to Cheryl since 1980 and we have three great children, Jessica (b. 1983), who is a Hendrix graduate and English teacher at North Little Rock High School, East Campus; Corey (b. 1992), who plays drums in the LEVItes, our contemporary Christian band at Lakewood UMC, and attends Pulaski Tech; and Andrew (b. 1994), who has musical potential but whose true gifts lie in the culinary arts field.
  • We have three dogs, Buster, terrier/min-pin mix; Lucy, a Chiweagle (Chihuahua-Beagle); Zeus, a boxer; and Steve, a red-tailed boa constrictor.
  • In “real life,” my last real day job was as director of Gifted Programs for the Pulaski County Special School District. I retired after 31 years in public education in 2005 and now am a school improvement specialist with JBHM Education Group and Legislative Advocate for Arkansans for Gifted and Talented Education.
  • Currently, my favorite food is my wife’s homemade black bean burgers and all kinds of vegetables and fruits, preferably fresh or steamed. I know, boring, but heart healthy, and my plan is to be here a long time. My favorite beverage is water and blueberry pomegranate juice. I don’t do much alcohol, but when I do, my favorite is The Macallan single malt scotch, 12 years or older.
  • Something about me most people don’t know: I was adopted at birth and know my birth mother.
  • The most interesting person I have met – my dear friend Rudolph Harst is one of the most interesting people I have been blessed to know, as he has followed his dream and lives it every day of his life. Another really interesting person is Don Shaw, a prolific artist and sculptor who does amazing things with everything. However, the MOST interesting person I have ever known is the lady who had my children. Cheryl is the most stimulating and engaging person I have ever known. She somehow manages to be all things to all people and does it all with class.
  • The musicians I play with in the Rockets are some of my favorite to play with, but I will have to mention some folks I played with in Gibraltar who remain dear friends: Mark Johnson, David Higginbotham, Kathy Cooper, Steve Hackler, Mike Carrigan, Keith Stewart, Gil Colaianni, Robert Dobbins, Mike McGowan, Richard Mason, and Wes Sossamon; and then, with the KSSN Bandits: Chuck Gilbert, Andrew Frye, Jonathon Joyner, Snook Crossley, and Eric Nolen; and with Ambusch: David and Scott Kloss, Herb Conway, and Doc Adkins. Currently, I am enjoying playing with Chuck Gilbert and Kat Hood, Paul Edmonson, Billy Hoover and David Seago in Katmandu and at Lakewood United Methodist Church, the praise band, The LEVIites, which morphs from Sunday to Sunday but always delivers a great worship experience. My greatest joy will always be playing music with daughter, Jessica Lauren, who sings like an angel, and son, Corey, whose drumming is always creative and potentially amazing. I’ve been on stage with some more famous than these, but none any better than these.
  • My favorite color is royal blue, but I’m kind of partial to the rainbow that comes from a crystal when the sun shines through it…
  • My favorite comedian is Robin Williams, who still brings me to tears without even a script. Love the improv people.
  • Personal note: Thanks to God for the blessing of being able to still do something I love with people I love.
